Volunteer Medical and Dental Missions to Mexico

March  2009

TRIP NOTES
On Thursday, four planes left Santa Barbara, cleared customs thru San Felipe, and arrived at San Ignacio Lagoon for whale watching. We were excited that it would be a great day as there was no wind on landing but soon the breeze kicked up a sea in the outer lagoon and whale petting became whale watching. Three planes came on Friday, when the whale petting was better. One plane from Mulege made for 8 planes on the field for Saturday’s clinic.

MEDICAL CLINIC
The medical clinic was quite busy with new and returning patients. We saw approximately 45 patients.
The clinic was well staffed with both new faces and returning staff.  Deborah Turturro, a Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner, pulled double duty, seeing a few clients and triaging at the door. Val Eurman shared the triage duties and was very helpful, interpreting both on the medical and dental side.  EMTs Heather Bliss and Mike Nizic had the vital sign station working smoothly and sent the clients in to see Dr. Valle with interpreter Eliz Vansteenwyk, Dr. JC Cates with Bobbi Balderman interpreting, and Dr. Eric McFarland with Sharon Granoff RN interpreting and assisting.
The pharmacy was under the direction of Medical Clinic Coordinator Marilyn Enns, with help from Bobi Bliss, RN and her daughter, Tiffany Bliss.  Myra Howard-Cochran, Family Nurse Practitioner, worked the lab and pharmacy as needed. We continue to update the check-in process and improve the charts, which are making for better continuity of care.

DENTAL CLINIC
Every March seems to make a new record number of patients seen, and this was no exception, with close to 90 patients being seen by five dentists, and first trip hygienist Cindy Hoffman. Chuck Moggia’s smiling face and great attitude were a blessing on this busy day.  Patsy Hodges assisted Chuck.  Stu and Roni, as always, efficiently kept the patients flowing, even as Stu did a couple of root canals. Dick Klein delivered numerous denture cases and as usual had to turn away new cases due to time constraints.  John Grube and Bob Ruby, with Larry Cochran assisting, did a record number of extractions with a fair number of complicated and difficult extractions. Karen Yule sterilized instruments and Cindy Campbell assisted in hygiene.  Marilyn Zellet did triage.
