Volunteer Medical and Dental Missions to Mexico

JULY  2009

TRIP NOTES
The July trip made up for not being able to land in June, due to problems with the airport permit. All of that hopefully is behind us now that there is a five-year permit. Only three planes made the trip from Santa Barbara. Weather on the Pacific side was mild, but a little warm on the Sea of Cortez side. The temperature at Calexico on the way back was a toasty 115º.

CLINIC NOTES
The medical side was well staffed with Dr. Rosen and Dr Weinstein.  Lydia did medical translating. With a small, yet competent, medical team, the patients, including some from the military camp, were seen very efficiently. One very small 6 month old infant, with complex problems, was referred to DIF, the Mexican family help center in La Paz. This 6 month old was the size of a newborn and needed a host of surgeries, beginning with a septal defect repair for the heart. Bobbie, Harkinan, and Bonnie took vitals and screened patients. Thanks to Marilynn Enns for her terrific management of the meds, seeing that the pharmacy ran smoothly and that patients have what they need while we are away for the summer.

DENTAL CLINIC
The dental clinic ran smoothly, with triage being done by Eustaquio Aguilar.  John Grube, with the help of Larry Cochran, kept busy with fillings and extractions as did newcomer Michael Carley, with the assistance of Nick Withem. Sterilization was a team effort!!  Fortunately, the dental side was not overwhelmed this month, and we were able to finish at the same time as the medical side.

HEARING CLINIC
Wonderfully dedicated Bonnie Rettegers came on this trip and saw many patients. Several were fitted with hearing aids.  Bonnie’s services are always greatly appreciated.

NOTEWORTHY
There is a new requirement that pilots complete and submit a form to Homeland Security prior to leaving the US. We will therefore need passport numbers and other additional information on your sign up forms for next year. Current passports will be required.
