Volunteer Medical and Dental Missions to Mexico

January  2009

TRIP NOTES
Except for some early morning fog, the weather on Friday was good for the trip down the Baja Peninsula. Four planes left from Santa Barbara, one from San Jose, and one from San Diego.  On Saturday Bobby Powers flew the Mulege contingent over to Cadeje, to make a total of seven planes. The wind blew strong on Saturday but fortunately was aligned with the Cadeje runway.  At one point, there was a 20-foot high cloud of dust over the length of the runway. By afternoon departure the wind had abated to a ten-knot breeze.

MEDICAL CLINIC
The medical clinic saw close to fifty patients. Drs. Debbie Weinstein and David Rose worked well together and kept the flow of patients moving, with the help of Debbie Murphy doing triage and EMTs Leo Ramsey and Harkinan Gill taking vitals, doing lab work, etc.  Sarah Bridge, Jenna Wells, and Susan Grube translated.   A great job was done in the pharmacy by Pat Holloway and Patsi Hodges.

DENTAL CLINIC
The Dental Clinic was a-buzz all day long.  Dr. Chuck Moggia was kept busy with multiple fillings while Dr. John Grube did many required extractions.  Dr. Stu MacPherson performed six root canals, in addition to  fillings, which kept him busy after hours.  Melodi Willis did several teeth cleanings and Donn Zellet did triage. Dentists were assisted by Carissa Meyer, Roni MacPherson, and Larry Cochran.  Thanks to all for a wonderful job.

 DICK KLEIN DENTURE CLINIC
Yes, the man needs his own category! Dick and his wife Joanne returned from Washington State, arriving in Loreto on the 3:30 Friday afternoon flight. Dick got up early on Saturday and collected his denture cases and met us at the Mulege runway Saturday morning. He then worked all day on Saturday without a break, no lunch, and started 18 new cases as well as delivering the previous finished cases, which he worked on for many long hours before going to the States for Christmas. He did this with a smile and a great sense of humor.  Dick is loved and appreciated by all. Thanks for the great lesson of commitment and excellence.
