April 2008
TRIP NOTES
There were good tail winds until northern Baja, then mixed
winds southward, on Friday’s trip down. The weather
on the Pacific side was near perfect. On the Mulege side
there were strong easterly winds. Sunday’s trip home
saw the usual headwinds and a generally smooth ride. Tobin
and his plane stayed an extra night in San Juanico and met
with the teachers in the schools about the computer program
on Monday morning.
CLINIC NOTES
Marilyn cracked the whip on the medical side, working with
Bobby Bliss in the pharmacy, as Dr. Bob Gayou (wearing white
with lovely tan accents), Dr. Barbara Hrach (in a light green
and flowing, tasteful floral), and Dr. Eric McFarland (in
a soft, natural pressed, blue scrub complemented by khaki
slacks) spent time in between patients test-driving a new
chart and progress note format we are developing for the
clinic. The translators, Dan Seible and Debbie Murphy, were
excellent and significantly contributed to the patient experience.
Approximately 50 patients were seen with enough time for
Dr. Gayou to provide the local practitioner with a short
course on suturing. Plans are underway to initiate a monthly
health-related information session for the local people and
we are looking for appropriate Spanish-speaking health professionals
to teach. The topics so far considered are: basic first aid,
dental care, nutrition, elderly care, and caring for your
children when they're sick. (Editors note: The medical side
seems to be overly concerned with fashion this trip. Barbara,
is that your influence?)
DENTAL CLINIC
The Dental clinic was a great success. Dick Klein worked
hard and delivered seventeen partials and full dentures.
John Grube and Jerry Woolf kept busy doing extractions and
fillings. Stu MacPherson did many fillings, and even a couple
root canals at the end of the day. Donna Hillman had the
patients smiling with clean teeth. The dentists were assisted
by Melodi Willis, Larry Cochran, and Roni MacPherson. Clair
Woolf was ready and willing to step up and learn some dental
assisting, with the help of Melodi. Sterilization was performed
by Maggie Crosby. Susan Grube, Marilyn Zellet, and Don Zellet
did a great job keeping the patients organized and coming.
With a job well done by all, a new patient record was made
with a total of 79 patients seen. Way to go team!!
