Marisol
Higuera
Hi John,
A brief update for the next Aeromedicos newsletter: This past
Saturday, January 5, 2001, Kirk and I were successful in our
efforts to have Marisol Higuera,
the 10 year old deaf girl from the fish camp at San Gregorio, enrolled at
Rancho Sordo Mudo, the only boarding school in Mexico for deaf
children. She is expected
to remain there for the next seven years to receive a complete education
through high school. (Many graduates of Rancho Sordo Mudo go
on to college.) This would
not have been possible without the help of Aeromedicos, Bonnie Rutgers, Nancy
Callahan, Ted and Margo Kenney, and many others who so graciously assisted
in her plight. It was quite something to drive the entire family (2 parents
+ two children) + our two dogs, + Kirk and me in one car all the way from
San Gregorio north to the school. You can imagine traveling with
a family for whom
September 11 is just a date in a world where they have no need for clocks
or calendars. There were too many "firsts" to record. (The Santa Rosalia
ferry terminal; houses of wood; a highway wider than two lanes; french toast;
pizza; McDonalds! ) The biggie was a cruise ship of 2000 tourists in Ensenada.
So thank you to all!
XOXO Marla & Kirk
